What are affiliate and supporting foundations?
The Community Foundation of Louisville (CFL) provides communities outside the Louisville Metro area access to the benefits and services of a community foundation through relationships known as affiliate and supporting foundations.
Affiliate foundations are governed by a local board of community leaders and directed toward meeting local needs. CFL serves as fiduciary and mentor, providing technical assistance and all back-office support services. Through affiliation with CFL, less populous cities can enjoy the benefits of a community foundation, while avoiding the administrative concerns and costs of operating a separate foundation. CFL currently administers affiliate foundations serving 16 counties in Kentucky.
Supporting foundations offer many of the advantages of a private foundation. But because CFL provides professional management of a supporting foundation’s administrative, investment and grantmaking activities, donors and their families can focus on their philanthropic interests without worrying about burdensome details. CFL currently administers one supporting foundation—the Felix E. Martin, Jr. Foundation—which is dedicated to meeting “the educational, civic and cultural needs” of Muhlenberg County.
The map below shows the location of CFL’s affiliate and supporting foundations.
