The Community Foundation of Louisville makes four general types of grants to IRS-approved public charities: Grants awarded competitively by the Board of Directors from unrestricted funds; Grants designated by donors of endowment funds to achieve their charitable goals; Grants from endowment funds created by nonprofit organizations; and Grants recommended by donors. Scholarships are available in a wide array of areas, as well.

In 2009, the Community Foundation and its donors supported the programs of more than 1,800 charitable organizations with grants and distributions totaling more than $32 million.
