Grants Awarded: 2009 - $150,000
Partners: Family Scholar House and Jefferson County Board of Education Adult and Continuing Education
Norton Healthcare and its partners have developed a program to help 50 participants obtain training in healthcare professions, which may range from GED to vocational certifications or college degrees. This program will offer retention and career transition experiences, job shadowing, externship opportunities, one-on-one mentoring and ultimately employment at Norton Healthcare. Participants are selected from the California, Phoenix Hill, Shelby Park and Smoketown neighborhoods of Louisville.
“We feel that this program gives so many people opportunities they would not have otherwise had,” said Tony Bohn, vice president of Human Resources at Norton Healthcare. “For Norton Healthcare, it is extremely valuable in not only providing career advancement for people, but making sure the organization has the well-trained staff necessary to help care for people in our community when they need help.”
The Change Makers program at Norton Healthcare will help increase family median income, educational attainment levels and strengthen these targeted neighborhoods. The partners have worked diligently to establish a program that can serve as a national model for promoting high school graduation and post-secondary educational attainment and opportunities.
